Breast reduction

General Description of Breast Hypertrophy

Many women, although embarrassed by the size of their breasts, do not dare to take the step of surgery. However, breast reduction is a well-controlled, quick and painless procedure. It brings a significant improvement in quality of life, offering considerable benefits for those suffering from large breasts.

Breast hypertrophy is characterized by an excessive size of the breasts in relation to the general morphology of the patient. It is often accompanied by sagging of the breasts (breast ptosis) and sometimes breast asymmetry. This condition can have psychological, but also functional and physical repercussions, causing pain in the neck, back and shoulders, as well as discomfort when dressing and playing sports.

From the end of growth, or even before in certain extreme cases, and throughout life.

The final result of breast surgery becomes visible after about a year, but the physical and functional changes are felt from the first dressing.

Description of the intervention steps for breast ptosis

  • For any breast operation, two preoperative consultations with a plastic surgeon are necessary, as well as a consultation with an anesthesiologist.
  • A mammogram and/or ultrasound will be performed.
  • Before and after breast reduction photos will be taken.
  • A support bra without underwire, opening at the front, will be prescribed.
  • Pre-operative instructions:
    • Stop smoking at least 1 month before and up to 1 month after the procedure to reduce the risk of necrosis and complications.
    • Stop all anticoagulant or antiplatelet treatment 15 days before.

The breast procedure takes place under general anesthesia, with the patient in a seated position to ensure optimal results. It lasts approximately 1h30 to 2h.

  • Breast reduction is not a painful procedure, and the aftermath only requires simple painkillers.

  • Patients can leave the next day, or even the same evening after the procedure.

  • Swelling and bruising may appear in the breasts in the following days.

  • No nursing care is necessary after the operation, and showers are allowed the next day, although baths are not recommended for a month.

  • Since the sutures are absorbable and located under the skin, no removal is necessary.

  • The support bra must be worn day and night for 6 weeks to avoid any tension on the scars.

  • Scars should not be exposed to the sun for at least a year.

  • Depending on the profession, a work stoppage of 5 to 15 days is recommended, with a return to physical activities after 6 weeks.

  • Regular consultations will be scheduled with your surgeon (generally at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and one year).
