GYNECOMASTIA

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia refers to a benign overgrowth of fat or mammary glands in men, which may affect one or both breasts, either unilaterally or bilaterally.

This abnormal increase in fatty tissue (adipomastia) or mammary glands (glandular gynecomastia) varies in severity, from a simple breast bud to more significant enlargement.

Although common in men, gynecomastia often occurs temporarily from childhood to adolescence, disappearing in about 90% of cases. In the remaining 10%, it may persist into adulthood and require treatment.

Glandular gynecomastia

It is distinguished by an exclusive hypertrophy of the mammary gland, often attributed to a hormonal imbalance. The main treatment usually involves surgery to remove excess glandular tissue.

Fatty gynecomastia

It mainly results from excess fat in the pectoral region. In such cases, liposuction and cryolipolysis are two possible options to remove excess fat and reshape the breasts.

Mixed gynecomastia

It is a fusion of the first two types, involving both excess glandular tissue and fat. Treatment will depend on the proportion of each component, and a surgical, non-surgical, or both approach may be considered to achieve the best aesthetic results.
