Change of breast prostheses

General Description of Changing Breast Prostheses

Breast augmentation using breast prostheses is one of the most frequently performed operations in cosmetic surgery. It allows women to regain self-confidence and appreciate their figure and their image.

However, over time, breast implants require careful monitoring and, possibly, change.

What does a change of breast prostheses involve?

Breast implant replacement is a surgical procedure to remove existing implants and replace them with new ones. This procedure aims to guarantee a natural appearance, a perfect fit and a harmonious aesthetic result, while taking into account the health and well-being of the patient.

Who Can Request a Change of Breast Prostheses?

This operation may be requested to change breast size, resolve problems with previous implants, or replace aging prostheses. However, it is not obligatory to replace breast implants every 10 years.

Although dentures cannot be kept indefinitely, their removal and replacement are necessary in the event of complications or signs of wear. Depending on the material, location, and manufacturing, they can last up to 20 years.

How does a breast implant change take place?

After assessing the need to replace breast implants, confirming that there are no contraindications, and arranging all necessary pre-operative appointments, the procedure can be scheduled.

Breast implant replacement takes place under general anesthesia, either on an outpatient basis or with a 24-hour hospitalization. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the existing implants, sometimes accompanied by the fibrous capsule that surrounds them. Next, he adjusts the pocket where the new prostheses will be placed to improve the shape and position of the breasts, then inserts the new implants. The surgeon may choose to use the same incisions from the previous operation or create new ones, thereby minimizing visible scarring.

It is also possible, at the patient’s request, to combine the replacement of breast prostheses with a breast lift (mastopexy) to obtain firmer, more youthful breasts.

What is the recovery period after breast implant replacement?

The first few days after the procedure, patients may experience slight pain, swelling and bruising, which gradually subsides over time. It is advisable to wear a support bra to reduce swelling and keep the new implants in place.

It is recommended to avoid intense physical activities for several weeks, but returning to light daily activities can be considered in the days following the procedure.

Compliance with the surgeon’s post-operative instructions guarantees optimal convalescence.
